While I was away on holiday teir was a female boxing convention on in the hotel with around 24 of the top wemen boxers in the world present. on the perticular day it was raining and overcast so we decided to spent time inside around the main lobby and bars. having stuck my head through a side door I came across the opening ceremony of the event, big room with stage and dignateries sat behind a long white table clothed table with around 500 guests all suited and booted....now I've just come from the beach stil dressed in T-shirt, Shorts and flip-flops. I sttod at the back with Val and took a couple of snaps with the small panasonic camera of Val's. Next thing everyone stands up at the end of the speech and claps....a dozen or so press photographers move to the front to take pic's.........so I follow them looking totally out of place. End up at the from of the stage with these guys snapping away....next think I get a tap on the shoulder.." Senior you need to sit down while the video's are playing....so sat on the floor in front of the stage while they show clips from a couple of fights that 2 boxers who have been awarded trophies were involved in...the top 2 Mexican boxers in the world...Jackie Nava and Ana Marie Torres.........then get shifted to one side while the next speech gets under way...then more photo's...I can't believe I was left with the TV crews and Press without being challenged...Happy Days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Short version.
The 2 big names who were at the conventsion were Boxing Promoter Don King and......................Oscar "Golden Boy" De La Hoya who also runs Golden Boys promotions who hasoffered to promote the female boxing side of the W.B.C. As soon as the event comes to an end I'm looking for a pen and something to sign so I ask a member of a TV crew if he can help me out.....he passes me the minutes of the meeting in Spanish of course........I take this off him and leap up onto the stage.....borrow a black felt pen of a German rep for the WBC and manage to get the great Don King to sign it before he's out of his chair......Oscar De La Hoya already has a couple of security gurads around him and is well into a TV interview.......with others waiting to talk to him....I stand patiently behind him, must have been in the pic's for the interview.....The German guy has a huge boxing glove for Oscar to sign
so I give him the pen back and end up next in line to speak to the Legend who won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics and has also defeated 17 world champions and has won ten world titles in six different weight classes. Pretty Awesome IP graph for me hols. Had 30 seconds with him, photo and graph done them on me way...........I did over hear that he was already 35 mins late for another TV interview over near the Plaza...went straigh over, only 5 mns away and met up with him again for a 2nd photo.
If yo have seen the other pic's...Val and myself have seen many a WBC boxer on our Hols......pic's and autographs, even went to the boxing event and watched 7 fights, Jimmy Lennon Jr was also the ring master of events too!
That's me behind the giant Glove having me 30 seconds with the Legend Oscar De La Hoya.
The Boxing Promoter legend Don King.
