To give you an idea what an amazing lady Ingrid was, here's a small story about her kindness. I joined her fan club back in the 90s, and wrote to her several times. With Ingrid you could talk about normal life issues, and she was aware of the immigration troubles my wife and daughter were having (they are American). Despite moving here in July 2000, it was May 2005 before their passports finally had their visas stamped due to the IND wrongly rejecting my wife and daughter's application. During this time the IND held their passports and effectively their identity. The appeal judge in 2005 took just 2 minutes to throw the IND case out. If we had been unable to get legal aid to fight the IND, Ingrid offered to get someone she knew to represent my wife. We got the legal aid in the end and did not need her help, but I will never forget that generous offer.
From what I have seen and read, this was typical of a big hearted and lovely lady. I met her three times in the end, the last time was in 2007. I urge everyone to read her biography 'Life's A Scream'. Her ordeals in prisoner of war camps, and escaping the Berlin Wall were testament to her spirit, bravery, and will to succeed. Whenever I feel down about my own life, I remember what she and so many others suffered, and it reminds me my own problems are trivial and not worth worrying about. Here's a pic of me with Ingrid in 2007 -
