Re: Charlton Heston

I didn't think my Charlton Heston graph was the real deal when I got many years ago. Now I know for sure it isn't. I wouldn't mind but the sec smudged it!

Re: Charlton Heston

I finished reading the whole discussion last night (lengthy), after reading the blog last week. It will be interesting how well this is received as it opens up a can of worms for good dealers.

The study compliments the isitreal work, and adds the "Charl" / "Chall" comparision which is hard to refute.

My charity shop found book is good (what a bargain that is proving to be), but the Planet Of The Apes pic bought from a UACC RD over 10 years ago is not, and is definitely the secretarial "Chall" signature. I still have my original cc receipt and the "life time" coa from them, so will rescan a larger picture tonight, and enter into dialogue with the seller.

#12 - Tell me about it! I was looking last night and they are everywhere. A lot of respected/trusted dealers have been selling them, a few have already removed them from their sites/eBay, but many have not. How they handle the refund enquiries will be interesting - news of this is widespread in the hobby.

Re: Charlton Heston

This has been an interesting piece of news, as many of us, collectors and professional dealers alike, have suspected this for many years, as as wheel says, these are not the only ones.

Far too many peole, and i include some so called dealers in this, are far too happy to simply asume that just because it has come through the post with a signature that resembles that wch is known, then its OK and will then sell it on.

And that is simply not good enough. some of todays top stars use a secretary that can mimic that of the star they work for, or at least mimic it enough that at first glance it looks OK. So if it looks OK, then why not go ahead and sell it?

Heston was a big star, and could probably have coped with signing his daily mail if he had wanted to, much as Alec Guinness did. But his days were past, and although i no doubt expect his mail was still large, it would not be as large as say Angelina Jolie, who is still acting and spends much of her time travelling etc. So can we really believe that she signs stuff for fans through the post? some do!

The problem is that people want to believe that these are real, the simply don't want them to be fake, especially if there is money invloved.

Reading through the posts on the Autograph Live site, you can see that some are still wavering, hoping that the story is not true.

When you are authenticating any signature, you must always only consider the facts as presented before you, not the rumours or stories that go with the signature. Always start with the premise that its a fake, and look for the things that prove it is authentic, and never the other way around.

And if you have bought a Heston from a dealer, then do the right thing nd go back and ask for your money back now. Any decent dealer would refund and let you keep the photo for future reference as well (never throw them away, the will prove usefull one day!).

Re: Charlton Heston

good points garry,i agree with you, always do research on what you recieve, wether it be ttm or bought signatures, like garry says, some dealers and even collectors dont want to accept there items are not genuine, some collectors say, well i am never going to sell my autographs,so it doesnt matter if i am wrong about its authenticity, but what we must acknowledge  is that one day,all autographs get sold, some where down the line, wether its next week or 20 - 30 years from now

Re: Charlton Heston

Its interesting to see that the only dealers who are still offering secretarially signed Heston photos are non AFTAL dealers!

I know that we all have our own views on dealers, but at least the AFTAL ones are on the ball when it comes to this kind of thing!

Garry. Autografica. (just Google it)

Re: Charlton Heston

I have to agree with Garry. There is lots that goes on behind the scenes at AFTAL and news, such as this Charlton Heston discovery, is distributed to all of the dealers.

Of course there are some good dealers that are not AFTAL members but so often you see other well established sellers offering secretarial signatures from people such as Michael Caine or Tony Curtis and now Charlton Heston.

There is no excuse nowadays as most of this information is available on the internet. I find it very frustrating that some well established sellers of autographs seem to go through life with their eyes shut.
