Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Hi there,

I was working on one guide and saved it - Then I stupidly opened a different guide and clicked publish.  Now I have two guides that are the same, and my biggest and best (That I've been updating and improving for five years with 34,000 views, has been overwritten.

The question to the group is:

Does anyone know if you can revert to a previous guide once you've overwritten one?

I don't see any button or option to do so - Just wondered if it can be done.  I was thinking of temporarily changing the title to reflect the disaster - But - I haven't touched the guide since I messed it up in case one more overwrite would dash any chance of recovery.

I luckily have a hard copy of the guide, but I would very much like to revert and not have to rewrite.

Thanks for your help.

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Here's the official eBay replay guys!

Hi Barry,

Thanks for your mail.

I have checked-in with the eBay team that look after buying guides and unfortunately, they’ve advised me that there is no way to revert to a previous guide.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Kind regards,
Alan

So, let that be a warning!  Duplicate and back up stuff you write on the eBay guides.

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

You could try ringing customer support. they may be able to undo the overwrite and put it back to how it was before.

Alternatively (and I'm not sure but I think guides may come under the Community umbrella) you could post a thread here:

http://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Forum-Issues-Suggestions/bd-p/21100000001

and ask the Community manager alan_uk@ebay.com if there is anything he can do.

I hope you get it sorted

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

You could see if you can recover it by using a program like "Recuva". I'm presuming you've had it saved on your computer?

Another thing you could try is seeing if the original is still retained in a Google cache. If it's only recently "gone", it should still be there.

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Hi and thanks,

No it's not on the computer - I should have saved a copy.  I write directly into the editor and save there (That's where the error crept in I guess).

I do have a version of it on my lappy, but I was hoping that ebay had a means of recovering without having to put in a day's work!

Thanks for your suggestion,  Barry

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

I was wondering what size of file you lost?

Thanks to you I've done what I've been meaning to do for months, I just saved 23Mb of files to a disk just in case.

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Hi,

I didn't lose a file.  I overwrote a webpage using the eBay guides editior.  It was about fifteen screens of scrolling with appx 40 chapters, 30+ pictures, 2 videos and 20+ diagrams.

I do have all the pictures, diagrams and videos, and the text - But the prospect of putting such a documant together again is a little daunting and I'd like to 'revert' if possible 🐵

Cheers, Barry

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

At the time, didn't you think to try "undo" Ctrl +Z ?

Your pages were all files, everything has a file size = the number of bits or bytes.

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Well, you can bet that I've made copies of all my other guides pretty smartish!

There is an undo feature but doesn't work after a save of course...

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Have you tried looking in your history which is on the star tab with your favourites.

The old version may still be there, but I dont know how this works, so it may just show the overwritten page if the URL is the same

I know what I mean even you dont

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

Hi all,

I've managed to redo the guide.  I had the text and all the pictures so it wasn't too much trouble to put it back together again.

Nothing that eight hours of intense work couldn't sort out (A revert button would have been so much less hassle!)

If anyone wants to have a look at the the scale of the project please have a look:

Hey. Stupid me just lost five years work in the eBay Guides.

I've been reading your guide and got as far as "Equatorial mounts" before tea called me away.

I think a bit of proof-reading is needed and correction of spelling mistakes but I'm enjoying it so far bravo
