'Work for dole' scheme recommendedPress AssociationPress Association – Tue

A US-style "work for the dole" scheme could save £3.5 billion a year in welfare costs and help hundreds of thousands off benefits, a campaign group said.

The TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) said only the "extreme sanction" of stripping people who refused to do 30 hours' activity a week of all state help would force them to seek "proper jobs".

And it said ministers should seek an opt-out from EU rules if necessary to give welfare reforms the necessary bite, warning the flagship Universal Credit scheme would otherwise have "limited effect".

In a report written by entrepreneur and former Conservative parliamentary candidate Chris Philp, the group which campaigns for lower taxes hit out at the cost of welfare dependency. Two-thirds of the jobs created since 2000 were taken by "immigrants prepared to work hard rather than rely on benefits" while many Britons "evidently weren't interested", it said.

Under the proposed scheme, individuals claiming the new Universal Credit would have their payments automatically suspended if they declined to take part in prescribed activities. For most that would mean 30 hours a week of community service, charity work, approved training, work experience or "meaningful" job hunting with officials. Claimants employed for fewer than 30 hours a week would be expected to make up the difference and the time would be reduced to allow for those with childcare "or similar obligations".

It might have been an idea if before coming up with that they had first looked at the sanctions that are already in place and saved themselves the effort.

If you are claiming JSA, you may have a sanction, which is a reduction in your benefit, applied in a number of different circumstances. You might be sanctioned if you:

  • fail to attend a compulsory training or employment scheme
  • fail to carry out a direction from a Jobcentre Plus adviser.

The second reason means that a claimant can be sanctioned for the slightest slip up.

Its not the "slip ups " that are the problem  @Bank

Idyllness has become a way of life  amongst the British , and decades of welfare , have created dependency .

We simply cannot afford any more freeloaders in this country , regardless if their Grand Parents were made redundant needlessley by Maggie or not .

The time for wailing and looking wistfully in the past is over , you dont need 3 decades to get over a a job loss .

IF you really must do a proper job in manufactruing etc , then please emigrate to China or South korea , if not dolnt wait for the govt to "bring back large employers "

Just start some business ,  however humble and cease to be a burden on the state .

Did you know the staff are now trawling through records for past years, to see if they can ban people from benefits, for small infractions in the past.

The providers have quotas of numbers they must get off of benefit

and off course while you're suspended from benefit, you are not on the Jobless figures

 Papko,

Start a Business ? , who is going to buy from you, if everyone around you is also on the Dole ?

WHO REALLY GETS BENEFITS

The overwhelming amount of money spent on benefits, go on Pensioners and People IN WORK,  this is rising all the time because of low paid Part time work , which makes up the vast majority of these 1.3 million 'Jobs' this Government have 'created' , it also includes all the Temp Xmas jobs in the last 2 years.

The majority of housing benefit goes on working People and we now hear, that Boris in London is going to force Boroughs to raise rents drastically to nearer Private rent levels and guess who'll be paying for that, Yes it will mean a massive increase in Housing benefit costs. (more than wiping out any gains from the Bedroom Tax)

btw

It is estimated that the real Jobless figure in the UK is a minimum of 3.7 million

Ah well , just lie back then and think of your industrial heritage , when your grand parents worked , and lived off Vegetable soup .

Unfortuantely @AL , nobody owes the British working class a living , they have bene beaten left right and center ,

By the Germans and Japs , the Chinese and South Koreans

We cant keep millions of folk in luxury , they are going to have to work or fail , Dole money is going to be reduced to a bowl of soup twice a day , and makeshift shelter in a feild .

People will HAVE to work , if they want anything else
