That's more than my 25yr old daughter weighs, but does it justify taking the child into care if she was otherwise cared for?.

I don't think she was "otherwise cared for" if she was allowed to reach that weight at that age.
That's abuse, not care.

I do believe it is a tragedy that a five year old has reached that weight, but I don't know the facts so cannot comment on whether it right or wrong that the child was taken into care.
I certainly won't start pulling the parents apart.
I have also had first hand experience of social services devastating a family just because they believe they are right, the trouble is, because in the last few years a few mistakes have been made the law gives them far too much power to do as they please. with little regard for the family as a whole.

I was with my daughter collecting my eight year old granddaughter from school & have to say I didn't see one child I would have called severely overweight. I know it happens but it's probably rarer than we are led to believe.
