On my own personal survey of one I'd say amazon is miles behind ebay. I went there, once, years ago to try and find a book. I didn't like the way I was pushed at every turn to open an account and have never returned. I browsed on ebay for quite a while before I found something I wanted to buy and only then opened an account and have returned thousands of times since.
On the other hand I was watching some quiz show on day-time TV recently with my mother. One question was to name "The ten most visited websites". Although the show might have been repeated for years and the list out of date, it showed amazon in 4th place and ebay in 7th.
So I would suppose the answer to your question would depend mostly on who is doing the comparison
I read your link when it appeared on another thread. All I can say is that I was surprised that amazon had such influence that by itself it could make or break a business.
