I've been a fan of this thread for ages as I think some of these gifs and photos are really clever.

I've never done anything like it myself but would really love to know how to teach myself to create gifs. I can't afford photoshop but recently downloaded paintnet and am gradually finding my way around that.

Can anyone tell me how to go about learning the basics? My son (who lives in Oz) recommended I download the microsoft gif maker but when I did that, there were no instructions to help so I was no better off.
