Does Anyone Crochet?

I have the hook and I have the wool
Wanting to try granny blanket squares.

I can make a chain and join it into a ring.

Then the pattern gets confusing.

Tells me to work double crochets.

Found instructions on youtube, but the person demonstrating it said that she calls it double crochet, but in the UK, it is called a treble.

Can someone give me a simple explanation of a double crochet please

Maybe this will help you .....  http://www.crochetnmore.com/123basics.htm#Stitch%20Conversion%20Chart

Uk crochet stitches and American crochet stitches are not the same, the chart above explains the difference between the two and tells you how to do each stitch.

ie ...DC is a double crochet stitch in UK terms but it's a Single crochet stitch in American terms

TR is a treble crochet stitch in UK terms but it's a Double crochet stitch in American terms etc ....

You must follow either UK or American stitches throughout the pattern and don't mix them.

Mustard tree....crochet is having a bit of a revival at the moment, as is hand knitting. As 'blue' says, the confusion arises between U.K. and American stitch descriptions. I used to crochet with fine cotton, but I find that difficult now, but I have begun to crochet again with wool...new baby on the way in March! I have found some fabulous patterns on Pinterest, and also various different tutorials for different stitches which are excellent. Crochet used to be a bit boring, but some of the new patterns are stunning, so I hope you master it. Thing is with crochet, or knitting , if you make a mistake you can undo it and start again...with the same yarn, and you haven't lost anything!

Good luck!

As gas been said as long as you stick to either one or the other style then it will be pretty easy to master, a granny square is probably the best a d easiest place to start, as you can work out your own style of handling the yarn an forming the stitches. Although the basics are pretty much the same with individual crocheters you'll find that each one will have their own style. I used to like experimenting with different stitches and to see if I could come up with something completely new. I prefer crochet to knitting because it grows so much quicker.
It's amazing though what you can make just with simple granny squares. Have fun xx

Pardon me interrupting but does anyone remember as kids knocking four tacks in to a (wooden) cotton reel and "knitting" a sort of tube which eventually extended down the hole and made a looooong "chain" which you eventually sewed in to a circular "mat" or as near as you could get to a rectangel with rounded corners?

It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.

Oh yes....I remember doing that! You can actually buy those reels now, ready made to begin knitting.

I wondered if anyone would remember doing that, it was a craze at junior achool. I wonder if kids still do things like that?

I remember that too CD, we called it french knitting.

As astro said you can buy a gadget to do it, think it is called a knitting dolly or something, I actually bought my twin grandaughters one each last year, they did have a go but I dont think they mastered it. Dont think it was fun enough for them TBH xx
