Hello to all our old friends and newcomers alike. Welcome to Bill & Charlie's Bar - the place to meet other posters and to sit and chat while you sample your favourite tipple. Plenty to drink, lots of joking but alas no smoking.
We are open all hours (hic) and run a respectable Bar. (Although I argued with Charlie until I was blue in the face over that one!) No swearing, spitting or drun..drunk...drunken beeeehaviour (hic). We have a couple of bouncers to hand ~ she comes in on Friday nights.
Teetotallers are welcome and will be treated as normal. I jest ~ soft drinks are available at the bar along with light snacks. And finally, please use the emergency exit when Bill rambles on about the good ol' days and put plugs in your ears when Charlie 'sings'.
Come on in...:-D

Harriet, don't know if this is of any help, but I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Ridiculously slow and cumbersome to use. Pages would freeze, and I'd have to log out and back in again, and it would take an age to open a link. It even took a good two/three minutes to log off. No amount of cleaning/virus/spyware scans made any difference. It was driving me potty, and came very near on several occasions, to my launching it through the window.
A mate runs a PC repair shop and I took it to him. He blamed the hard drive. He said after a time they wear out (on older models - mine is about 5 years old) and so the system becomes sluggish. He showed me the HD and there was a 'half-moon' needle on it, and it was this to blame apparently. He suggested replacing it with a solid state HD. No needle on this. This cost £130 (cheaper than buying a new one, and which would also have meant having to put up with the awful Windows 8), but I can honestly say that now, if it goes any faster, it would be in danger of getting a ticket for speeding.
Memo to Harriet and Willums.
Ditch AVAST, and install AVG instead. The only pop-ups I get are when a scan has begun and/or finished. And it's automatically updated with each scan.

To Emb,
Hubby is going to sort my PC out while I'm at my mums. He's going to install a solid state hard drive and windows XP (he always had it and never had any nonsense happening ever!) . It should be faster than fast after that he said.

Harriet, since it's almost time for your visit to the land of the bicycles and wooden clogs, could you please check on the ferry and see if our ebullient Mine Host is working as a waiter serving afternoon teas ? Conspicuous by his absence, I fear he's been demoted.
If so, could you please tip him well ? Cheers !
To put you in the mood for your trip, here is a little song. (Children's version).

My PC seems to run faster now. Hubby has put something new on the inside to speed things up a bit and I'm getting Windows 10 soon (hopefully an improvement on Windows 7 and 8), so if all goes well I will be flying through the Internet soon.
Talking about flying. I'm going to Holland tomorrow for 3 weeks to look after my mum. She is getting an operation on Monday. No Internet at my mums. Sometimes a good thing to be away from it all and get a break from the information overload.
Up at 7 every day, in bed by 12........nothing but "troep" on the telly (it's worse than here), so hardly worth watching, no DVD player, no mobile phones (I don't have one anyway and neither has my mum). All in all a great way to recharge my batteries and I'm going to stuff myself with loads of nice Dutch treats and hopefully gain some weight.

Remember to look after yourself Harriet

I will Al, I promise.
Guys I wish you all good weather for the coming weeks (and myself for that matter as it's the same in Holland as here) and play nicely with each other. No fighting and no swearing please. Sarcastic remarks are permitted though (someone needs to take my place for a while).
Get Bill out of the asylum and behind the bar as we could do with some proper service in this place. Sick of making my own coffee all the time.
See you all in 3 weeks again.
