'How Would You Rate Your Item' in feedback section should be changed

I ALWAYS leave feedback for buyers or sellers but I'm in agreement with those who are not comfortable with the recently introduced compulsory 'How Would You Rate Your Item' from 1 to 5. You can't leave feedback without submitting a rating.

I've seen people replying saying it's a rating of the transaction....well then, why didn't they put 'How Would Rate This Transaction' from 1 to 5. As well as that there ARE reviews for items and how good they are so how are we supposed to know that this isn't contributing to that if it says 'how would you rate this ITEM'.

It means that thousands of people won't be leaving feedback (like myself) because they've only just received their item and, reading it correctly, will deem it something to do later when they've used the item.

Call me pedantic but it's always best to use the correct words. Say what you mean. If it's 'how would rate the transaction' then don't put 'how would you rate the item' cos that's to do with rating the item itself, not the transaction. Obviously?

Sort it out Ebay.

Agree totally. There have been quite a few complaints from members including myself, and the community managers are aware of the issue. So far no change.

Totally agree. It's so wrong of ebay to block feedback on a seller/transaction from being left until you leave a completely unconnected product rating.

You can get the old, less stupid, version of the Leave Feedback page if you use the link at the bottom of your feedback profile page instead of the link in your purchase history. If you approach it from there then you still get the version of the page as it was before ebay decided to "fix" it. How are buyers supposed to know that though?

Thanks for the old link - hopefully eBay'll get rid of the new system which, let's face it, makes any rating received pretty pointless (and possibly damaging) as it was enforced...

Yes this does not work if you are buying gifts, as you are not going to use it, the only thing you can rate is the,  seller and transaction, and this now not possible. So you either leave a false reviwe on no feedback at all.

@willow_angels use this link: Leave Feedback (ebay.co.uk) to get the old version of the leave feedback page.

You're right, this new version is all wrong. Ebay have completely confused two separate things. Feedback is for rating the transaction and the seller. A product review is for rating the product.

So is this a review of the product we've purchased, or, something to do with the seller?

I encountered this for the first time tonight. I recently purchased a brand new dvd of a film.

I watched the film yesterday. I tried to leave feedback but the box was greyed out. I eventually realised the 'Rate the Item' was compulsory.

I left 4 out of 5 which was my opinion of the film!

I buy & sell on eBay & have left far more feedback than I have received.

I'll use the old version as long as it remains available, but will stop leaving feedback if this new version is the only option.

How do you get to the old version, Arthur?

I can only use the Ebay app or Ebay desktop version and both of them force you to rate the item. I don't want to rate the item. Not till I've used it, watched it, or put it on...which could be days, a week or more! I should be free to choose at leisure what the rating is, or not at all. But I DO want to give feedback and a rating for the seller for a smooth transaction and prompt postage.

It went away, I noticed, but now it's back!

So is the answer to find an old version of the Ebay app? (just crazy)

In the meantime the seller isn't getting feedback from me which is a shame.

Aha. Thanks Arthur.

Mind you I've just tried the link rainbowtrax gave but when I select an item to leave feedback I get the same compulsory 'how do I rate this item?' thing....

It's not there for things that haven't arrived yet but the item that arrived today it is.

Completely gummed up. I'll just not bother. Not leave feedback. Ah well.

As I exclusively use the iOS app, I cannot get into the workaround for the original feedback option.  I will not be forced into rating an item, so I guess I won't be leaving any more feedback.

forcing you to rate the item in hope that item will be bought by more buyers, due to rating.  If everyone just rates the item with 1 star, ebay will be quick enough to remove it.  The whole ebay in general is turning to bloatware to be honest.

'How Would You Rate Your Item' in feedback section should be changed

This was introduced in the US a few weeks ago resulting in the same pushbacks from members.  No chance of it being removed.  It was felt that it was an attempt to compete with reviews that are seen on Amazon - copying Amazon again as voluntary reviews on eBay bought products were not being given.

As has been mentioned above there are numerous reasons why a review of the product may not be appropriate or even relevant.  I buy mainly consumables to be used within my business which may not be used within the timescale that feedback / reviews can be given so I guess that is one less job to do; previously I always left feedback.

A review on many items, especially second hand, may be entirely subjective - is it fair to penalise the buyer on such reviews?  Good luck to those sellers selling new branded products of which they have no hand in.

Feedback was intended to measure the service provided by the seller; communication, packaging, service, speed of delivery, complaint handling, etc.  As such if feedback is going to be subject to only being left after a product review penalties on sellers for poor feedback should be removed at the least or preferably feedback should be removed completely as the imposition of a review to accompany will skew the result adversely for sellers. ......... or is that the real intention?  Or will it be used to rid the site of poorly made Asian tat flooding the site?  I doubt it.

Unfortunately rating everything with one star will unfairly penalise sellers - it's best just to leave no reviews and if that means feedback is not left then so be it.

I wanted to leave feedback for a seller who was polite, helpful and responded to my message quickly. But as the item didn't arrive, I couldn't leave feedback, because I couldn't rate the item. I did eventually manage to get to 'leave feedback' another way, which didn't have the item review section - good old eaby, where what should be identical pages throw up different results.

Totallt agree with you! I will skip leaving feedback where I dont yet know the rating for the item. eBay should know better than to make these types of mistakes

In that case nothing has changed for you.

Leaving feedback has always been Voluntary,

How has 'nothing changed'?

Yes, feedback is volutary, but if you do choose to leave feedback about a seller/transaction - which is what feedback is supposed to be about - you can't unless you leave a review about the item.

of course things have changed.  i can no longer give feedback unless i 'rate' an item.

if i buy something very ordinary (but which i am happy with) i would have to give an honest one star rating but then i expect the seller would be penalised

if i buy say a lightbulb i can only honestly rate the item  after a year or perhaps  more after i have seen that it works properly.  in the past i would always give positive feedback for a timely hassle free transaction providing the item appeared ok

now i will no longer give positive to 'good' sellers so they will lose out

this  requirement needs to be removed
