Refund - Completed confused, eBay has issued a refund without item being returned / issuing label

Hello, can someone offer some guidance.

I had a return request for an item (first time) and when I clicked the return it showed a number of return label options. I had no direct communications with the buyer. I purchased a return label (I wasnt given the option to buy one internally through ebay, I had to purchase it separately and upload it) and I uploaded it where required, then on the next page it gave the only option as 'refund'.

I have now had a notice to say the buyer has been refunded, no waiting to see if they return the item, nothing. I am not even sure ebay has sent the buyer the label? In the return options this was the only option I could select, I couldn't send the label through message to the buyer as it is a PDF and ebay would not allow me to.

Absolutely confused. It was an expensive item, which apparently I have given the money back for and not yet recieved the item, unless I have misunderstood?

Can someone explain what has happened or what I need to do? What if they don't return the item, will they have even recieved my label?

Mant thanks

You say you clicked refund!

Ebay would then assume that you did not want item returned.

Never refund until item has been returned, too late now.

As soon as you refund, Ebay assume the case is settled and they won't step in to make the buyer return the item.

You should communicate with the buyer.

Tell them you can see they have their refund and check they have received the label you provided so they can return the item they bought.

Have a look at your return policy to make sure you haven't set your account up to automatically refund without needing a return.  I can't think of any other reason why you couldn't send a label through Ebay.
