My item arrived damaged to buyer , what do I do next

My item was sent via royal mail, well packaged but arrived damaged.

I don't want the item returned

1)Will I need the buyer to send the item back for a claim ?( I don't really want to pay for return postage)

I've asked the buyer to send more photos. 

2) I have to claim via royal now

You need lots of photos of the packaging to add to your Royal Mail claim, that's about it.
