Buyer hasn't read the title or description properly.

I listed a metal platform to be used with 3 in 1 multi purpose style ladders. the title and description clearly stated the platform 'for' the ladders, and not platform 'and' ladders. The buyer requested a return as they said they were not as listed or described, as they thought the ladders were included, as I had also used a stock photo, to show how the platform attaches to such ladders, which is the same practice used by the manufacturers and other sellers.

I had one viewer contact me to ask the exact width of the platform to see if they would fit his ladders, which was fine, but he didn't go ahead, but this buyer haggled the price down to £16.62 ,from my original listing price, so I sent a counter offer of £17.50 which he accepted, so to then say they expected the ladders to be included was rather astounding!

I have responded to ask as to what sort of ladders would he get for that price, with the platform, when the listing has been classed as 'New'.

The pictures I used show the platform, still in it's original wrapping and clearly in my garage, and then an obvious stock photo of the platform on a set of ladders. Surely, if I were selling the ladders as well, I would have taken a photo of them as well to be included in the listing.

I contacted eBay and their response was that as the title had the word 'ladders' in it, that is where the confusion may have occurred and I should accept the return so I don't get a black mark against my name, but as I said, why should I pay the postage for someone not reading the description properly? I was told that if I do accept the return, I could then report the buyer for misusing the eBay money back guarantee. But I would still be out of pocket!

I will wait to see what response the buyer comes back with, but currently thinking of totally withdrawing from eBay as it stands.

I thought I would get the thoughts of others on this matter.

Ebay will take the buyer's side - they have already advised you to accept the return.

If you don't provide a label for the buyer to return the item, they can ask Ebay to step in.  Then, Ebay will tell them they can keep the item and they will be refunded from your money.

Your listing does say:

I can also see why a buyer would think they're getting the ladder.

You have no option but to accept and pay for the return if you want your item back, the buyer will be refunded either way.

Buyer hasn't read the title or description properly.

So, if that’s the case what would they do if they were to buy the same item from a manufacturer as that is how they class the item? The description makes no mention of it including a ladder and for £17.50 would you buy a ladder for that price?
As I mentioned another potential buyer has managed to read this correctly.
Do we have to now factor in for stupidity and not taking responsibility for your own actions?

You put 'ladder' in the listing title and included a photo of a ladder in the photos section. I know you wanted to show how it worked, but that wasn't the best move. Most buyers will be looking at a small screen and their brain will just see the word 'ladder' and a photo of a ladder.
