I received an item which did not work as described. I contacted the client, they said return it and they would refund it. I did so and the next day they closed the return case. I never got a refund. So now I've no item and no refund, yet eBay says (through the autobot chat) as the return is closed the decision is final and cannot be reopened. I've been scammed.
How can I get eBay to step in and make my refund?

Given that the seller conned you into opening a case using the wrong reason, which is also the only reason they can refuse, I think ebay needs to take some action on this.
You should have opened one using one of the not as described reasons.
I will tag the community managers.
Please can you intervene here, the seller's behaviour is appalling!

You can do nothing now.
On every listing right side is a link to the 30 day money back guarantee which if used correctly will get a refund. There is no need to contact the seller, or if you do very unwise to do as he says to return direct and not use the proper system. Seller knows that it was the incorrect advice.
You chose to contact the seller and returned outside the proper system, and there is no way to force a refund.

Looks like there's been an update to that case, you should be able to see it in the case details.
Thanks,
