925 Silver stamp means nothing

I bought a silver ring from an Ebay business seller on the 10th January this year. It looked OK. It was S925 stamped and sold as a sterling silver ring.

Yesterday, I noticed the ring was looking a little less than silvery, and after closer inspection, realised the silver had given way to copper! So, instead of it being a £23 silver ring, it was now a 58p copper ring. The seller says he bought it in good faith from a local dealer. True or not, I'm out £23! And because I didn't do a metal purity test, or sandpaper it down to revealing a different metal, Ebay said they're not willing to help.

If I bought a silver ring from a jeweller and found out it was copper three months later, I'd be going to the jeweller to get my money back.

I've taken loads of picks proving it's counterfeit, and the seller says he'll return my money upon receipt. But if he renegs, I no longer have the ring or physical proof the ring was fake.

Thoughts?
