Been told by E-bay they have issued a refund and I have not got my item back is this fair ?

What has happened may be the eBay default response if your buyer opened a case against you in the Resolution Centre and you did not respond within 3 days.

Yes I was on holiday with no internet so knew nothing about it so now I am over £220 down and no item either

I am sorry about that. I think the best you can do now is to contact your buyer and try to resolve their issue if you still can, or at least appeal to the buyer for the return of the item at your expense. Your buyer has no incentive to do so though and neither eBay nor PayPal can force your buyer to respond. You may need to take legal advice if it is worth the expense.
Too late now, but the usual advice given on the Answer Centre is to end all listings a couple of weeks before you go away, to prevent what has happened to you.
