I am new to bidding, while bidding on something now, bids must increase by 20p yet on the last item I bid for I was outbid by 1p? Can anybody explain please?

Not at the auction finalend time ** ... the Highest bid always wins, so a highermaximum bid already placed will win even if only by a few pence ... adding an extra odd pence amount above your maximum bid, especially when close to auction end time helps, as even 1 pence can often make the difference between winning or losing at auction end as you have found.
