just been a done the tesco shop
two things of note today
they have started doing self scanning on trolleys - big thing by door, trolleys have holders screwed on the handles
and the other, more upsetting was that they have taken the 2 for a £ off the doughnuts 😞
other small price rises have been noted
one of the home shoppers was saying the manager was making bakers put flour on all the bread rolls instead of just the scotch ones - everyone was moaning about that

I never shop at Tesco either, I refuse to part with any of my money in their direction
when they have policies I so very much disagree with.
I know all supermarkets, well the major ones, are guilty to a degree but Tesco really
seem to excell in driving local businesses out in their attempt at what appears to be
world domination!
I know we have to shop somewhere but does anybody stop and think WHY certain
places are cheaper, why there are price wars and what the quality of the stuff they're
buying is like?
We have three huge Tesco's within about a seven mile radius, the staff in all of them
are horrible (often commented on locally) - obviously not every single one of the staff
but most of them have a couldn't care less attitude and only deign to assist customers
when they've stopped gossipping. Weirdly though, the customers are the same types
of people. Sainsbury's, of which there are two within the same radius, has pleasant
staff and different types of customer. Very odd. Asda, well Asda is Asda but, to be fair,
it isn't in the best location to either be the best (always seems dirty/grubby and food
very disorganised/all muddled up and messed about with) or attract the best!
It sounds obvious when we think about it but these places like Tesco can only offer
these supercheap/supercarp offers by exploiting other, better run businesses/
local businesses and by sourcing the cheapest stock which affects allsorts of
stuff including the environment - they seem to have no environmental policy at all.
Do we really want a future in which the environment is ruined by us (either directly or
indirectly) and in which the world by Tesco?!

As a Tesco worker I am sorry you feel Tesco staff are horrible, We have lovely staff in our store and nothing is too much trouble, we are sadly under a lot of pressure at the moment with staff not being replaced when they leave, and having to do the job of two, and until recently it was frowned upon to interact with customers as it was seen as time wasting, that has changed because they have realised it is not all about money and is about customers, we are only a small store and know a lot of our customers by name and are considered as a friendly store by our customers, who don't like going to the larger Extra store 4 miles away.
There are plans to build another store 12 miles away and everyone! is up in arms about it because of what it will do to the local shops, the person who started the petition and is the face of the campain shops in our store twice a week, double standards or nimbyism!!!!!
Also a lot of our regular customers are from this town and they say they can't wait for the store to be built so they don't have to trudge 12 miles to our store.
I personally use this town to get my meat from the butchers and veg from the veg shop on a regular basis.
I wouldn't defend Tesco taking over the world because it does look like that sometimes, however when you look at the supermarkets after they have been built they are packed with locals, as long as people will shop in them Tesco will build them.
In Totnes I think it is they have refused any major supermarkets prefering the local shops, very admirable, but it is a very wealthy town with lots of 2nd homes so they can afford to shop local.
Our local Sainsburys has a different class of people who will tell you they only shop there because you get a better class of people in Sainsburys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yep heard it myself, Tesco is perceived to attract rif raf. and people would rather spend more in Sainsburys than shop with the hoy paloy.
We have a planning application in from Asda at the moment, this keeps getting thrown out as we have 9 supermarkets all ready but they keep coming back saying they will give the town more and more money, building roads, housing etc.
They say they will bring custom to the town centre, but what else will they be building, Restaurants, and shops, how is that helping local shops?
Nope I think the time has almost come where the country is saturated with supermarkets and we need to stop and build no more.
Also part of the death of the high street is the dear old internet, how many of us buy most of what we need on the internet, and be honest, rather than the hassle of trapsing around the shops and paying extrotionate car parking fees.

I have a large monthly shopping delivery but do smaller shops of fresh stuff on my way to work or lunchtimes. I can use Sainsburys, Tesco or M&S but I always use self serve because although I don't get a price discount by doing it myself I can save loads os time which is really important when I'm on lunch or going into work. I don't need to get stuck behind someone with several kids who wasn't organised enough to get thier childrens lunch beforehand & is stopping en route to school or some pensioner who thinks that 8.00am is the time to monopolize the check out girl in conversation.

Quite right Blackadder, I know that as long as people carry on using them,
large supermarkets will carry on appearing. As to the staff, obviously not
every single member of staff is rude or shirks work, but I think the difference
is honestly that where you live (and where I'd love to live), the pace of life is
slower, people are nicer and have more time for others - again there are
those who don't fit that category but round here it seems to be all for
themselves and greed rules. Again there are exceptions but it all seems to
be about having a better house than your neighbours, who's got the
newest car or stupidly hugest 4x4, there isn't a lot of community-mindedness.
That shows everywhere including the shops and supermarkets. A lot of
folk don't seem to realise that all that isn't important in life, it's what you're
like as a person that matters.

Here Here couldn't agree more, we are a small friendly town on the road to nowhere so people have time for each other,
I don't have time for snobs or oneupmanship, we are all people with a job to do.
You will have to come and visit sometime.
