Wizzi, what do the Doctors do for you re your hernia?
My treatment - should I need it (thankfully I don't suffer at all with mine - one of the lucky ones) is omeprazole Gastro-resistant capsules. Non spicy food diet. Extra antacids like liquid gaviscone and sleep with high pillows so you make sure your gullet is not on the same level as the stomach (lying down) to keep acid reflux at bay.

wizilizi
Elevating the bed - not extra pillows - will help with reflux, you need to raise the head of the bed by around 4-6 inches. Not sure if OH would like it though.
Have you tried 'Kalms'? The ones in the green packet are for daytime and the ones in the blue packet are for nights. Just a mild, natural, herbal relaxant that can aid sleep. Works for me.
Also no hot drinks 4 hours before bed as it can aggrevate the stomach lining.
A glass of tepid water about an hour before retiring helps as it dissolves any acids without generating any more.

I'm A "Wednesday's child" and as the saying goes, "Wednesday's child is full of woe" By God it's true in my case! And I try to avoid the number 9, as that is my very unlucky number. Still, got to get on with it, haven't you? LOL

I'm a Wednesday child too! but I'm not full of woe, I'm always happy.....
Wizzi, some good advice there, I too have a hiatus hernia and found I can't lie on my left side to sleep as I press on it and it gives me pain the next day.
I take lansoprazole for mine, if I try to stop it, it soon kicks off again.
no spicy food, fizzy drink either, citrus foods are a no no too.
Hope you are feeling better today, try some of these ideas and see how you go.

The Doctor told me that HH is quite common - & from your posts it seems to be
I have Omneprazole. The Consultant (after I'd had the .. .. bleugh .. ..bleughghhhhhhhhh .. .. endoscopy) said to take Omneprazole before breakfast & before supper to prevent acid production, & to use Gaviscon if in pain
BUT my GP says that problems are arising from Omneprazole taken continuously & long term; these are to do with calcium absorption, trace mineral deficiency & massive resurgence of acid if the drug is stopped. She suggested taking it if I am very troubled by pain, but not to rely on it on a continuous basis
She recommended eating lttle & often, & avoiding massively acidic or spicey foods, of course, & said to take it easy after eating
Thank you to FHGers who have pointed out other things: the hot drinks makes sense; I'm ok after supper, but have a cup of tea which I drink without milk) & can then be writhing
It seems to be a matter of learning what aggravates it. On Sunday, the bad night which prompted the thread) I had eaten pork & had loads of hot mustard with it!!!! 😮 Just didn't think. A few more nights like that & I WILL think!!!!!
One of the symptoms which sent me to the GP was the occasional difficulty in swallowing, along with irritating coughing & sneezing when I eat. The Consultant explained that the acid reflux irritates the oesoephagus & makes it sensitive, sometimes giving a sore throat. She said that in mine no damage could be seen (which it sometimes can) & this is a good reason to control the problem
She also said that losing some weight helps. I am not huge but I could be slimmer!!

Also, I didn't know about fizzy 😞
On Sunday night I drank loads of fizzy water
Silly me

well if there's anything that outrages me it's the fact that "if you loose weight" blah blah. So there wasn't one thin person in the waiting room with you then Wizzi it's a standard cure all with consultants lately.
I was told I was clinically obese when I had my gall bladder out....ya don't say, like I have been walking round for 50yrs not noticing.....funny how the majority of the people in the ward with me were either younger or thinner????
You can always take a vitamin or calcium supplement to counteract the effects of your meds Wizzi, better do that and keep your stomach lined with good meds should you upset your hernia.
When I had my endoscopy they showed me the picture, inside was bright orange! and looked like the surface of Mars

I understand how you feel when everything is blamed on your weight Captain, fortunately I don't have that problem. But I am a smoker. Yes I know it's really bad, but you would be amazed how smoking is to blaim for any ailment I have. Even at the Dentist!
None of us are perfect. I am not overweight, I excersise regularly, I eat a reasonable diet and don't drink often.........but I smoke.
Whatever your weakness is this will be blamed and be the root of all of ailments
