Yes, they do grow, and more than 3ft, too.   You should consider the size of your garden before you plant one, or be prepared to get rid of it in a few year's time.

my step daughter left it in her step fathers garden when she moved out so it will be up to him if he has  to dig it up but it was really healthy.

Yes, we have one from last year and it's growing in the garden in its big pot.

Don't know whether to bring it in or not really.

A friend who owns a garden centre told me that there are no such things as miniature trees........conifers and such, only slow growing ones..

You could re-pot the tree to keep it fairly small, but watering is essential if you leave it in the pot, keep it in the shade and maybe an upturned pop bottle (  push the neck right into the soil near the root  )   with the bottom removed and keep it watered that way in the summer

We set 2 "used" Christmas trees in our garden, about 25 years later our son remarked that we had had one in the hallway one year..his new girlfriend looked up at the 25 foot tree and said

How did you get it in ?

how about bonsai tree? When traveling in Japan I saw lots of small juniper-pine bonsai tree of various height, I think all under 2 feet.

And the youngest tree is like 20yrs old.

As above - depends on the roots and the type of tree.

I got one that was perhaps a bit over 6" tall in a large festive flower basket in 2002 - put it in a pot and it's now over 4ft, still in a pot which has helped control the growth a bit, but I have had to increase the pot size twice.
