Look who we have living with us now !

After letting our dog go to play at Rainbow Bridge earlier in the year we thought ok enough is enough and we are not having any more, but it left such an empty feeling in the house.

 Then !

We got the chance of Martin, a 3 year old miniature Jack Russell and now we have a home again instead of just a house.

So pleased to hear your news! I'm sure Martin will be very happy with you, and you with him.  All the best for the New Year when it comes

An update on how Martin is getting on !

He has taken a dislike to me for some reason and will not come near me and growls at me if my wife puts him on my lap to hold him until she gets out the door.

Well if that is his decision so be it because I have kept on trying and he is having none of it. Therefore my decision is I am having nothing more to do with him in any way and he has made his bed and now he can lie on it.

He has one person who can feed him, walk him and bathe him and put him in his cage when she goes to work of an evening until I come home and in his cage he shall remain until she gets home.

What a shame you've had a bad start. Maybe he has had bad experiences with men.  I expect you have tried being the one with the treats? They don't always settle straight away, maybe he'll change his mind when he feels more at home.  There are some good books about, such as "Think Dog" by John Fisher, that might give some insight into what goes on in his mind.  I hope things improve. I certainly felt like giving my dog back several times during the first few weeks!

I find your post really sad.  You say you are having nothing more to do with Martin and he's made his bed and now he can lie on it Smiley Sad There must be a reason he is behaving like he is towards you.  Instead of you throwing your toys out of the pram and leaving him in his cage, don't take his behaviour so much to heart.  As Vamo has said, maybe he's had a bad experience with men.  Things won't get better unless you keep trying.  It's not the dog's fault he is like this.  Good luck.

please take martin to the nearest dog rescue and give him over, let him have the chance of a new home/family in the new year as you clearly don't like/want him.

i can't believe what i just read from you, a grown man throwing his toys out the pram because something has happened to upset the dog.

What gives you the right to come on here and tell anyone what to do with their dog ? Keep your opinions to yourself if you would be so kind until you know what you are talking about !

I am following the instructions of a couple in this area who are highly successful dog trainers who think where Martin came from allowed him to think he was alpha dog and by me ignoring him for a couple of days he will start to think he is not and when I do start letting him out he will start to think I must be the alpha dog because I control his movements.

So I think I shall follow their instructions instead of an amateur do gooder who thinks she can come on here and tell people what to do.

You never said in your previous post that you were ignoring Martin for just a couple of days.  Your words were "Therefore my decision is I am having nothing more to do with him in any way and he has made his bed and now he can lie on it".  No wonder Shonafp made the suggestion they have.  As for them being amateur, how do you know this?  Not  a do gooder but more like someone who is very concerned like anyone would be after reading your post.

Well I would say shona still has no right to come on here and tell others what they should do ! As she well knows I have had rescue dogs before who left to play at Rainbow Bridge through old age after 15 / 16 years of looking after them.

Why then would I rescue another if I did not like or want him !

As far as I am concerned this matter is closed and I shall follow successful dog trainers advice and not an amateur do gooder.

your words were that you were going to have no more to do with him, and he would be crated the whole time mrs darkcastle is out.

now you're telling us that you've taken advice from a professional dog trainer...
