Dangling things in cars

Just followed a girl driving a Beetle and hanging from her rv mirror she had a string with about 5 soft toys on it.  It was swinging about all over the place especially round the roundabout.  Must have measured about 5 inches wide and about 10 inches long.

Is there any law about this or is it just common sense?  I mean surely something this big must obscure visibility?  It just made me shudder that you might not see someone/something and crash into it.

Oi ! Alison do not get personnal  :^O.

Yes it is against the law but for some reason they seem to get away with it ! Saw something much worse today ! someone driving along with a satnav right in the middle of the screen at eye level ! Now how much of the road was that obscuring. If they pulled out in front of somebody they would likely scream blue murder asking what the other driving thought they were doing.

nothing suprises me anymore where drivers are concerned. Gawd! I can't even drive but I know I could do much better than some muppets I see.

I have never had anything dangling from the rear view mirror on every car I have driven.  To me, it is common sense that you should not have anything obscuring your view when you are driving.  Not everyone is like that though unfortunately.

Another couple of my pet hates whilst driving are people not indicating where they are going and also, people being in the left hand lane on a dual carriageway when they want to turn right and vice versa.

Gripe over for the day.

Don't get me started on bad driving or I'll be here all day LOL!

Seriously though, common sense doesn't seem to play a part anymore, with anything, including driving.

I too don't like anything hanging from my mirror as I believe the windscreen is to see out of and the more of it you can see out of, the better, so the only thing on the windscreens of our cars is the tax.

However, I am happy to have things dangling from other places (ooer missus!), and have little air fresheners dangling from my radio knob and mirror thingamygigs on the doors.  Hubby's car also has a small owl holding the tax disc thingy on by being shoved underneath it and a little piece of seaglass in an indent on the dashboard - it's exactly the same shape and colour of our car, so it has to live there really!

Seriously though, like some of you, I see ridiculous obstructions in peoples' windscreens and also on their rear shelves, some cars are loaded to within an inch of their lives making it impossible to see anything through the rear window.  I must admit I rarely use the rear view mirror, but use the side mirrors all the time.  I'm used to coaches where you have to use side mirrors as the rear is too far away and some don't even have a rear window.

At the end of the day it is common sense not to obstruct something which is there for a reason, to see out of.

People nowadays seem to think the law doesn't apply to them, I mean windscreen obstructing is just the start of it, there's mobile phone useage, seatbelt non-wearing to mention just two laws which are being blatantly ignored all over the place and nothing is done.  Just yesterday I saw somebody driving along a dual carriageway in the outside lane, texting!

The thing I've noticed more often is people pulling out on you when you are going round a roundabout.  Like they are refusing to give you right of way and that they want to take the gam ble that they can shoot out in front of you, get across quick and not hit you.  I've had 2 near misses in the last week with people doing that.  Its like OMG how much time does this really save them?  Its so reckless.  I didn't spot if either of these folk had dangly stuff on their mirror and just did not see me.  In any case its such poor driving :-(.

On the subject of driving.
Some of you might remember that I started having panic attacks on motorways (M25 mostly)

Well I went away to The New Forest at the weekend and had to drive 90 mins on the motorway.

I've had some therapy but yet to need more, but with the help of a rescue remedy spray constantly in use and a few scary moments I made it AND I made it home again.

I'm very proud of myself 🙂

Just remember to cut other road users some slack.  That bad driver you get cross with could be struggling, could have just lost her Dad, could have just put her Mum in a home or could be driving home after receiving some other life changing news. :-x

Well done Streety, that's fabulous!  I was in the New Forest last Saturday too, in Lymington.

True what you say, we don't really know what's going through peoples' minds when they are driving, though I must say if something is affecting someone so much that they can't drive safely, then they should wait a bit before driving or take somebody with them if possible.  But yes, it isn't always possible I know, and sometimes people have just made a genuine mistake which we all do sometime or other.

Most drivers were very kind to me yesterday when I had a coach on which the clutch had given up and which would only go into third and fourth gear, and only then with a lot of coaxing.  I finished what I was doing and got it back to the depot, getting it into gear with the engine revs and by not changing gear unless absolutely necessary.  Amazing how many green lights I got, how many clear roundabouts and junctions and, where I did need to stop, how many drivers seemed to acknowledge that I had a problem (maybe 'cos of the faces I was making!) and gave way to me.  It sure makes a change to mention all the nice, polite drivers instead of all the terrible ones!

I got a lift with a friend yesterday. She is my age & had a soft toy dangling from the mirror & two knitted monkeys on the dash. 😐
