Updates! KB3035583 came back?

Would you believe it? Checked for updates (Win 7) and lo and behold KB3035583 had un-hidden it self again.?

So I hid it again.

Also, after I installed the latest updates (except KB3035583) a homegroup icon had appeared on my desktop.

Sooooo, I removed that by going to :-

Control Panel

Network & Internet

Appearance and personalisation

Personalisation

Change desktop icons

In the Desktop Icons box, checked the network box, then unchecked it, clicked apply, clicked OK.

The icon was gone.

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

I'm having this problem again - not just that infamous update but others associated with the installation of Windows 10.

Now, it won't download any further updates at all - keeps sticking on 0%.

I've tried downloading one at a time and managed to get 3 downloaded and installed but now it's just doing nothing.

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

Same for me too.

I have hidden about 3 Updates and the selected downloads stays at 0%.

I cancelled the downloads the 1st time but then decided to leave it to see what happens.

It actually is downloading them but doesn't show the progress. It took about 2 hours to download & more waiting to start the installation process. Smiley Mad

Something is definitely wrong, used to be pretty fast. It got there eventually lol.

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

I gave up after 5 hours on Tuesday and started again yesterday.

Inch by inch, one by one - what a palaver!

Have finally managed to get the last of them downloaded just now.

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

I knew there were updates waiting but I didn't look to see what they were until today. BIG updated for MS Office and more for Windows. So, I did the Office ones first. Took a while.

I started the Windows updates at 12:03. The download stayed on zero until just before 3pm when I noticed it was "preparing to install". At 3:05 they were done and it was "Restart". I restarted and it was all done by ten past three.

Sooooo, the install didn't take long which leads to the question as the whether its the MS servers "at fault"? Overloaded? I saw on the MS website questions about whether the servers were overloaded but the question was avoided by the MS reps who replied.

The MS reps were waffling on about the users computers but if that was so, surely the install would also take a long time?

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

I know I prefer Linux Mint etc, but I really do try to like Windows.

The W7 laptop was successfully updated at the beginning of the month, so it was reasonably up to date when I told the updater to search for updates.

It took a little over two hours and forty minutes to find six little updates (41.2MB) and install them. (I noticed it complete its check for updates and told it to go for it, after a cursory look to see whether anything obviously nasty was on offer.)

I sparked up an Eee PC 4G (mighty 900 MHz CPU, with RAM upgraded to a whole GB) which hadn't been started for ages, and told Linux Mint 17.2 to look for and install updates. 116 updates/236MB - finding and installing them took and hour and four minutes. Not great, but better than W7 - and the fact that the little Eee's internal hard drive has been replaced by a cheap USB flash drive with the slow write rate typical of the beast is definitely something of an extenuating circumstance.

There definitely seems to be something wrong with the W7 update process.

So, do you think the MS servers are "overloaded" or what?

Your updates were quicker than mine but I suppose you didn't notice when the download finished and the install started and how long that took?

"Checking for updates" took from 2008 to 2243 - 2 hours 35 minutes.

Downloading and installing the updates took from 2245 to 2253 - 8 minutes for the 6 updates/41.2MB - at which stage it needed a restart.

Interestingly, the option in the updater to install other Microsoft stuff wasn't there, so I enabled it and was offered lots of updates for Office 2007. These flew - sorry, I didn't time them, but we're talking Linux-update standards here (apart from the need for a restart.)

Heck OE, why'd "checking for updates" take so long?

For me, "checking for updates" took only seconds to show all the MS Office and Windows updates..

As I said above, I downloaded and installed them in two lots, Office first. It was the downloading that took a long time for me.

Here we go again. More updates, more seeing the progress bar on zero. I'm just doing the Office updates for now, I suppose the D/L will take ages again and the install will be done in no time? I forgot the time I started, we shall see how long from now?

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

I went out and came back at 3pm and found the D/Ls finished and all installed so I've re-started and at ten past three started the whole saga off again with nine Windows updates. We'll see how long they take?

Updates! KB3035583 came back?

It's been going for five hours now and the progress bar's still showing zero.

It seems that every time MS bring out a "new" OS, they "punish" those sticking with an old one by ensuring the update process takes so long that MS hope they get so ticked off they'll upgrade to the new system?

What's OE got to say about it?

OTOH - isn't there an aphorism along the lines of "Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by sheer incompetence"?

The trouble is that all the sneaky behaviour which has accompanied the urging to update to Windows 10 makes one more than a little suspicious of their motives.

Just for fun, I sparked the W7 laptop up and told it to check for updates.

That was over an hour ago. I could have downloaded, installed and updated a Linux distribution in that time...

And of course, I've no idea how much longer it will take.

At twenty five past eight, up popped the message saying the updates were installed and to re-start.

The D/L progress bar had been on zero all that time!

Mine's still checking for updates. Using 50% CPU in the process, too.

I just hope it doesn't kill yet another of my computers by frying the motherboard - two is enough!

Even so, I'll leave it running overnight and see whether it finds anything - and just hope that nothing melts.

After a healthy (?) pushbike ride earlier and a couple of beers this evening, I need my bed.

(Motorbikes are certainly a much better idea, but probably don't offer the cardiovascular benefits I seek.)

I'm still puzzled as to why your machine takes so long to find the updates? When I check for updates (from IE and clicking safety) they appear nearly instantly, it's the downloads that take for ever. The install happens so quickly I wonder if they're installing even though it's showing that it's still downloading?

Funny thing is..... after a re-start yesterday there was a new icon on my desktop "Homegroup". It's not there this morning.

It was the same with last months updates. What all that about?
