No reply from buyer

I put an item up for sale that was listed as broken. It sold and I messaged the buyer to be sure they had read the description and were aware it didn’t work.

I got no reply after 24hrs so I cancelled the sale and relisted the item. A few days later it sold again to a different buyer in another part of UK, and I again messaged to see if they had read the description.

24hrs later no reply so I cancelled the order. Four times this has happened on the same item and I (and EBay) can’t fathom out the logic, other than compromised accounts, but the sales were not asking for a different shipping address, delivery going to the buyers address lodged with EBay, and the price involved was less than £10.

The buyers money for the sale was registered through EBay as was the refund so no idea what the logic is behind this.

You must allow more time for buyers to pay before cancelling.  Buyers do not have to reply to messages, so this also is no excuse to cancel orders.

Once sold eBay allow a buyer 4 days to pay before a seller can cancel and relist.

Do not cancel so quickly,  eBay will pick up on this, see it as bad selling,  and you may receive selling restrictions.

ebays logic would be that you listed an item for sale and the buyer has bought it as described.

There should be no reason to contact the buyer to check they understand what they have purchased.

I would personally have sent it to the first buyer

I get that buyers aren't always sensible - and they may then want to return it AND they may return it as item not as described - but this is a risk of selling anything on ebay. Right now you would be at just as much risk of a high cancellation rate as you would from a buyer returning an item.

Contacting the buyer to confirm they were aware of a product not working is the right thing to do as far as I’m concerned because buyers tend not to look a descriptions and it can save everyone a lot of hassle - mainly myself - if they didn’t know.

My concern is it has been the same pattern on this same item on four separate occasions and it was that activity what my original post was concerning.
I know how to buy and sell on eBay.
If I get suspicious of a buyer then the sale stops irrespective of any third party rules or regulations. Just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas about the pattern. No problem if not.

I have never had a buyer take more than 24 hours to respond to a message concerning their order and I’ve been selling on eBay since 2009. I spoke with eBay and they agree it is something most sellers would be weary of and if I’m not happy with something in the transaction then it ends right there because, just like every other seller on eBay, I don’t have to sell if I think there is something not right.
