This is not a *slimming club* really.

I think it would be nice to have a place to come & chat about weight loss ideas (safe sensible ones only please!),
to share personal experiences and achievements, and also to ask for help.

Lindi is our resident expert, and has kindly offered her help.
Just introduce yourself and come on in, you are most welcome!

Haven't time to read all the messages, but I'd just like to say that I have lost almost 1 stone in about 7 weeks on Carol Vorderman's de-tox diet.

It's not that I'm trying to fill her coffers or anything, but it is great if you have multiple food intolerances (no gluten, dairy, soya, or sugar and low or no salt).

It is basically fresh ingredients cooked quickly and sometimes with grains, and non-gluten pasta occasionally. I have ME and have found that I have more energy with this diet as the liver isn't having to process as much junk.

There isn't really any secret to it - it is how we used to cook before we all became too busy to prepare meals from fresh ingredients. It is also vegetarian, but it would be easy to add chicken breast to a stir-fry.

I'm never hungry, and I don't have to think about it. The book gives you menus for 28 days and the recipes are in the back - so I don't need to think about it. The meals are very pleasant and enjoyable.

But you do need to shop for it before you start just to check that you have all the beans, etc in that you are going to need. I usually go to the nearby farm shop once a week for the fresh veg etc.

Off to bed now.

Catch you all later.

flopity, I have to pass on a warning about the Atkins diet after the experience of my best friend and her husband.

They were farmers, very active and with no weight problems at all until they retired in their early 50's when both put on weight.

They went onto the Atkins diet when it first came out and swore by it - lost all their excess weight and felt very fit and healthy. However, both are now almost crippled because of severe gout.

Their GP has said that he is seeing a massive number of new cases of gout and that most sufferers have been following the Atkins diet long term. He feels there is a definite link between the two and is about to start doing formal research on it.

My friends managed to convert quite a few of their friends to Atkins and know of at least another two people who have severe gout.

I'm not overweight, but would like to stick my nose in, as usual lol.

I have recently lost about 7 lbs, through no change in eating habits or exercise, simply by stopping hormonal contraceptive methods. Depo is particularly bad (it is actually awful for your body in other ways as well as just making you put on weight) the Pill isn't great either.

Before I went on the Pill, I was 5"6" and 7.5st, and went up to 9st in the first two months of the Pill, and then stabilised. Then tried Depo and shot up to 10st.

I'm now back down to just under 9.5 stone, and happy.

It is definately better to be fat and happy than skinny and miserable. I was 8 stone, skinny, and eating hardly anything, borderline eating disorder like Golfi, and everyone kept saying how I looked anorexic.
I'm now over a stone heavier, bigger boobs, bigger hips, much curvier and feel so much better about myself for various reasons.

Well done everyone who needs to lose weight and has lost it, no matter how much you have lost, you are doing well 🐵

I really admire anyone with intolerances, or who has given up choklit or crisps, I couldn't. I don't eat as much of them as I used to, because my hormones aren't all over the place and giving me cravings, but I still couldn't give them up completely...

Hi folks,
Just thought Id add my weight loss story as i thought it may be useful to some of you..
2 years ago I was about 5 stone overweight.. did slimfast, lost about 2 1/2 stone, was very pleased, but then got ill, having frequent severe stomach pains for about six months. Eventually this got worse and worse, and I was hospitalised.. turned out I had gallstones, which had led to pancreatitis (which is potentially life-threatening!).
Due to the gallstones, I was advised to follow a low-fat diet, and cut out alcohol to rest my pancreas.
I also read that a major risk factor in developing gallstones was rapid weight loss, so I decided to eat very carefully, but eat plenty, as I didnt want to make the condition worse.
I shop carefully and now only buy foods that are less than 5% fat (loads of things are, including many convenience foods), I cook using fry lite spray if necessary (means pancakes and yorkshire puddings are fine!) and eat plenty of cereals, rice, pasta, fruit and veg. This means I can eat lots of nice things and I am still losing weight!(surprisingly, lean steak, prawns, tuna fish, spuds, stuffing, home made beef stew, some curries etc etc are all under 5% fat!)
I have been really pleased, as I didnt do this to lose weight, but I am still, steadily losing 1-2lbs per week.
I have found making my own lunch for work etc. is very useful, and I use low fat soft cheese instead of butter if its needed.
I do miss a few things, like cheese, but its not too difficult, as theres a lot of choice in low fat foods, and I would advise anyone to try it, as its also healthy.
My younger brother has started to monitor the fat content of what he eats, and has lost half a stone very easily in a few weeks, just by making minor adjustments.
Also, for me this has meant that for six months, I have been completely well, which, after the pain from gallstones etc that I was experiencing almost daily, seems unbelievable.
Good luck to everyone trying to lose weight! If anyone else is eating low fat and has any tips let me know!

#151 - I've got a friend who has just be diagnosed with gallstones. While she has been waiting for the appointment for the scan, she has been on a low-fat diet (as her liver and gall-bladder cannot cope with it) and she has lost weight too without really trying.

Eilean

Just keep at it and the plateau will pass. Happened to me a few times last year. Just drink lots of water and keep the exercise up, and don't get disheartened.
