It does happen. The worst ones are where they underline then fill the margin with their comments on the underlined text. Usually total b*ll*x, of course.
Mind you, with what you say is underlined, it could have been Mary Whitehouse's copy - she might have been planning an assault on the publishing industry.

The book was illustrated, hardback and had line drawings of animals - particularly weasles and stoats - 'Wind in the Willows' comes to mind, but it isn't that (I have an illustrated copy)!
One line drawing has a number of animals looking through a skylight to a scene down below where aothers are round a table - or looking at a map.
The animals also walk through a wood at night. Lanterns are carried on Shepherds crooks??
A map is also depicted somewhere in the book - also reminiscent of WITW (above)- And some kind of water mill, but that is where my memory gets a bit blank.
Well, is that enough for anyone to have a stab at the name??
Please reply to "mgc-teach" if you think you have an idea of who wrote it or a title even.
Many thanks for reading all this jumble.
Tony.
And yes............I do want a copy.

Got mine at auction for about £30. Weighs a ton. Takes two people to lift it.

Unfortunately I do qualify to help, but the only thing that comes to mind is one of the Rupert adventures which I seem to recall involves sheperds' crooks and lanterns.

My first post on here, so apologies for any infelicities on my part.
As my question is about a John Le Carre audio book, I hope I don't cause any consternation to book purists!!
I understand that The Mission Song audio book has been withdrawn due to a technical fault. From communications with the publisher, I have managed to ascertain that only a very few copies were distributed before the recall and that the audio book will not be re-launched before the paperback edition of this title is published next year.
As I pre-ordered the audio book I have, for my sins, acquired this item, and apart from a minor inconsistency at the beginning of the reading (Chapter One is read instead of CD 1) I have, so far, not detected any further faults. Of course, I continue to listen very attentively. The CDs themselves play perfectly. The insert holding the CDs is a new design to me and does require careful handling. But I can't believe the item would be withdrawn because the CD case was a bad design.
I would be pleased to hear your comments. Do I possess a rare item? Or am i just unfortunate?

Congratulations!!!!! That's a brilliant achievement (turns green with envy). I do hope it's a best seller.
Re: the web site. Unfortunately, most of the geeks who know how to set up web sites can't speak plain English, so there is a bit of a communication barrier.
It depends what you mean by a web site. If you want a simple one with only a few pages, and no commercial activity, then most internet providers give you web space as part of your monthly contract. Otherwise there are loads of host companies who sell you domain names and web space for a very reasonable sum, depending on how many adverts and pop-ups you are prepared to tolerate.
Then comes the difficult bit........preparing the content. Again, if you have deep pockets, there are loads of people offering web site production services (IT students often do it for beer money). If you want to DIY, then it is necessary to become familiar with HTML and the web page software packages like Front Page and Dreamweaver. I found this quite daunting, so I enrolled on an evening class (free) at my local college, and after about 10 weeks emerged with a working web site.
I must admit, I've let it lapse somewhat since, as mucking about with web pages is very time consuming.
Do let us know how you get on.

Manor house books. You sound like a geek who could be instructed in English. Are you looking for beer money? Do you drink in moderation? If these criteria apply I would be very interested. I just want a web site to be able to sell my book. I do not particularly like being in the public eye-(even Cyclops) so have turned down a book launch. I have been to computer classes and gained a number of brownie points but websites were not mentioned. Thank you for your response

I fear you need to find someone fluent the alien tongue of HTML. Like the British abroad, I just read from a phrase book and gesticulate a lot.
Seriously, check out your LEA for an evening course in web design. They're all the rage at the moment.

After all, there's no need to set up a site as it is there already - and already has millions of regular viewers and prospective buyers.

Both book and d/j are in fine condition or so I thought. When held tightly the bottom and top edges are perfect but when looked at from the side the edges have a slight rough look. I can also see where it might be octavo or quarto. Any advice on this one?

Is it a HarperCollins US publication? Many US items have one or more edges untrimmed.
Quarto or octavo depends on how many folds per sheet to make pages: 2 folds for quarto to make 4 pages and 4 folds for octavo to make 8. Each one makes up a little section, then all the sections are bound together.
