The Young and the Old 50/50 split.

Hey there

I won a camcorder in the Treasure Hunt which I am so excited about and thank you very much to e-Bay for it- what a fantastic Christmas present to receive indeed..

I'd like to make a suggestion for a charity - I fully expect that this won't be a popular choice, especially as there are so many good causes out there, but my girlfriend's dad is dying right now of motor-neurone disease. It is a truly awful disease and I sincerely hope no-one reading this ever gets it. However, because it's quite rare, the Motor Neurone Disease Association doesn't get much publicity (or money for research).

Would really appreciate it if you would consider donating even a little amount to this worthwhile cause. It won't be in enough time to help him most probably, but it may just help future generations.

Thanks 🙂

From an earlier post ...

> As this was a Christmas treasure hunt shouldn't the
> money go to a charity that is *really* connected to
> Christmas:

Ah! surely you would be referring to the dog rescue charities
who have so much extra work to do thanks to the annual christmas
influx of abandoned dogs..

Again, despite remarks in ealier post, animal charities are
NOT as well supported as people may presume. Look at the HUGE
annual childrens campaigns on the BBC each year that raise
tens of millions of pounds with ease.
There are no such campaings for animal charities.
Animal Charities are excluded from lottery funding.
Animal Charities receive no government aid.

As a frequent unpaid street collector for animal charities
I can even quote cases of indoor shopping centers where
animal charities are not allowed to collect as they are often
considered to be controversial, and some chains of shops that
do not allow animal charities to collect outside.
(I'll commend Tesco and ASDAs as always being the most helpful)

Animal charities are excluded from many form of revenue.
If you read the WSPA newsletters, you will see that the highest
fundraisers manage only a couple of thousand pounds annually.
They do not have the megabudgets of live aid, childline etc.

Animal Charities DO need help, please do not exclude them.

Surely, auctioning the items first would raise much needed cash for charities. The charities could then chose to use the cash as they see fit.

Depending on the amounts raised it may be a good idea to donate to a number of charities as opposed to only one.

Many good suggestions have been made and many of the listed charities would benefit greatly from any donations, but I do feel that a childrens charity, especially at christmas, would benefit greatly. Perhaps the NSPCC.

Like i said earlier,a 3way split, children's charity, adults charity and animal charity. That way it covers what everyone seems to be saying.

Glad my original suggestion has been considered (I was Deezinah) I think the NSPCC FULL STOP Charity. What could be worse than an abused child:(

All the suggestions are brilliant. Many are close to heart either because local or through experiences we have had, however I agree with #145.
For most of the charities mentioned the people who benefit will in some way have it obvious their plight. Be it cancer, terminal illness, homeless etc.
Some of these will get occasional special treats and holidays and no doubt family treat them dearly.
Going back to #145 abused children suffer in silence, all year round. Noone gives them treats or gives them an extra hug for their suffering. Noone can often see the visable scaring and torture they go through. So maybe NSPCC or childline would be a good choice.
Never had a siggy anyway!

can I suggest that as a lot of people have said that ebay should auction off the unclaimed prizes then EITHER give all the proceeds to Children in Need (as they annually handle millions for UK Childrens charities) Or ask the winning bidder to select a charity. My third option is a charity called Tommy's please see http://www.tommys.org/index.html

i think the person who has devoted most time on this treasure hunt - and participated mostly in forums should be able to choose ONE of the unclaimed prizes. only fair in reply to their efforts and keeping the forum boards going!

What about Great Ormand Street, my child has been there for an operation, they are fantastic there, but need so much more money.

It is very difficult to watch the kids who have to stay in there most of the time, and proberly over christmas

i think that it will be nice for the money or Unclaimed Prizes to go to help baby care units to help keep them alive or to go to baby's that as been disowned by there mothers and put out in the streets and need care in

Auction all of the items then split the total equally between a number of lesser known worthy charities. There are many smaller charities that get overlooked because of bigger ones being able to afford to advertise. Charities such as "Samaritans purse" take out thousands of shoeboxes filled with gifts every Christmas to children in countries affected by war, poverty, natural disaster etc. They also rely on donations to buy medical equipment and supplies. Please bear them in mind! And next year why not all fill a shoebox for a needy child???!!! visit www.samaritanspurse.co.uk for more info.
God bless x

What about having a special auction for these prizes. The winning bidder for each item could choose from a selection of charities to send the proceeds of their item to.

As ebay is an auction site all unclaimed prizes should be auctioned and the proceeds divided between various childrens' charities but especially those that are for terminally ill children who are unlikely to see another Christmas. It's a pity that all the prizes were not available to be auctioned and the proceeds sent to where they could have done some real good........truely this is the spirit of Christmas.......not the winning but the giving!!!

With the diaster in thailand indina ocean ect, my be you could auction them off and use the cash to help them, what a awful thing to happen

help please!!!!!!!!!! anyone there

In true Christmas spirit, perhaps a charity that would benefit everyone; young and old. When people in the UK are fortunate enough to have clean water at the turn of a tap, and people are dying in certain parts of the world through being forced to drink germ-ridden water - and dying miserable deaths - should we not try to give people the most important thing that life requires - WATER!

We all take it so much for granted and complain if we have to buy bottled water in a country where the tapwater is not potable.

Clean water will help the young, the old and other aged people stay healthier. It will save lives.

I vote for a charity that gets down to grass roots and enables communities to have fresh, clean water to drink.

give the money to the red cross and help with the disaster that has happened in S.E asia, death toll will probably rise to 15,000 +. 😞

How about donating some prizes etc to huntingtons association, its a terrible disease with no cure and not anything like the funds it needs to make any decent progress, and for the families of sufferers who need carers once in a blue moon to care for someone so ill 24/7 takes a lot ,my family tirelessly raise money all yr to try and scratch the surface and its greatly appreciated,if you have never heard of huntingtons its what that bloke in eastenders suffers from, and can strike anyone from 30 yrs onwards

i do think it's sad some have said UK only charities.
No one chairty is more deserving than another, and people in alot of 3rd world countries don't get the publicity to get any money they need.
Please find some small charities, be it home or abroad, that would really benefit.
I think the lesser charities will benefit not only from the money, bt from the awareness raised by ebay.
