I remember when travelling Europe in the late 60s when the border was closed between Spain and Gibraltar at La Linea - I had to take the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta then by land to Tangiers and a ferry to Gibraltar.  On arrival I couldn't prove I had enough cash to pay for a flight back to the UK and was refused entry despite having a British passport!
