Oh but there are benefits, yes indeed there are......they send my Son, or Daughter, off to far flung corners of the World, to impose our way of life on others and I get them back, with no Arms or Legs; if I get them back at all................and all while the second hand Car salesmen, go back to their cosy little Houses and Families every night and have the arduous task of filling out their expense claims..............how civilized we all are.
Really a different topic but you are right - our current political system encourages short term populist views which end up causing the sort of situation we find ourselves in.
I've stated many times that I believe that the political parties of candidates at elections should not be printed on ballot papers. If we voted for the person we thought could best represent us rather than for a party we might end up with politicians that look to their electorate for approval rather than their party leaders.
