I live in South Africa and have been charged VAT on an item I bought in the UK on ebay. Surely this incorrect? How do I go about claiming a refund?

As you are the importer you are responsible for any import duty or VAT.

If you believe you are not then contact South Africa's customs.

I'm afraid that if you're registered in South Africa eBay will automatically add VAT.

If you're in the UK again and want to buy on eBay you may do better to buy as a guest. Although I imagine this will require you to provide a UK delivery address.
