Why not just put in a bid for the maximum amount you're prepared to pay fifteen minutes or even longer before the auction closes?  Auctions are won by the highest bidder, not necessarily the last bidder.  Let the chips fall where they may; if someone outbids your proxy bid, well, they were willing to pay more than you, weren't they?
