carlgparker, most Dickens firsts were 'triple deckers' - printed in 3 volumes. The 'E.755' on the spine is probably a library identification mark and shows the book is ex-library.
Also the book trade doesn't have a condition designation of 'average'. You have Fine, Very Good, Good and Poor to choose from, each having its own guidelines. Refer to 'Book & Magazine Collector' magazine for further details.
