Hi All, hope you are all well.

I have a book which I can't find on Abe or Addall

Just wondering if its worth listing or not

An Order to View by James Marriott, undated, published by Hutchinson & Co.

Thanks for any advice.
Regards,
Ann.

Is everyone away?

Or was my question too daft to answer...

:-(

Sorry. Been distracted trying to build a website and having no idea what I'm doing. Fun though.

There are 64 copies on Amazon from 1.64

Afraid that's the only place I could find any.

Hello, first time on this board (should have found it years ago!).

I have a question if anyone can help please?

I have a pocket sized book, obviously very old as the "s"'s are written as "f"'s. There is no date in it.

The title page says:

The History of Candid; (not Candide)
or,
All For the Best
Translated from the French of
M. Voltaire.
Cooke's Edition.
Embellished with superb engravings.
Printed for C. Cooke, no.17, Paternoster-Row, And Sold by all the Booksellers in Great Britain.

It has what looks like a leather decorated spine and is a bit bashed about but intact - lots of foxing.

I've looked on ABe Books, Addall, Googled it but can't find a reference to this particular edition. I notice that Cooke's editions of some classics are very old indeed - can anyone enlighten me please?

Many thanks.

could that be the one?

I googled and there are a couple of sites which dated it to 1800, but they literally just give the title, publisher and date and no more information.

There is a bit of info about the publisher:

COOKE, Charles, bookseller, 17, Paternoster Row 1789L-1817U. Livery Sta. Co. by 1792. Common councillor Farringdon ward within 1805-16. Son and successor of John Cooke q.v. Began to publ. series of 12mo classics neatly embellished by engravings c1793.

Cook, Charles. Died [16 Apr] in Paternoster-row, Charles Cook, Esq., many years an eminent bookseller, and one of the Common Council for his ward. He had a few days previously undergone the operation for the removal of a stone in the bladder. In 1809, he succeeded to the property of his fathr, the late John Cook, amounting to above 50,000l. acquired in the same trade (GM Apr 1816, 382; MM May 1816, 369).

Can't find any info to estimate its worth though.

Someone else will be along who knows more.

well done annmad I was searching without the e

Annmad you are a star!

Your link says:

Voltaire : The History of Candide or All for the Best. London, C. Cooke, ca 1799. Cooke's Edition/embellished with superb engravings. 12mo, Full calf with gilt decoration and title piece to spine. Binding held with tape. pp171, 2 full page engravings dated 1798 and 1799. Front free endpaper watermarked 1797. Engravings and near pages foxed, all other pages are tight, bright and clean.

My copy has no (e) in "Candide" but the rest seems to fit but I can't see any watermarks on the endpaper and mine has no title on the spine unless it has rubbed off with age.

Thanks so much though! They price it at £55.00 ..ish, so I will keep your link and see what happens :}

Thank you again - I should have Googled the publisher so thanks for all the extra info from both posters.

your very welcome ... good luck with it!

Nice 'Dry Foam' feedback score, Annmad.

;-)

Or are you too young to remember those ads?
