Thanks Malacandran.  A Quaife limited slip diff works in a different way to a standard diff.  A standard diff distributes power to the driven wheels in a 50/50 split, so if one of the driven wheels loses grip, the car is effectively only being powered by one wheel.  The Quaife automatic torque biasing diff automatically biases the torque across the axle to the wheel with the most grip until grip is re-established and then levels it back out to 50/50 until it needs to divert more torque to one of the driven wheels again.
