So can you give an example of where 'they' spout these theories as fact?  

Have you read the scientific papers? Or have you just read what the media are reporting on this subject? We all know how the media get things wrong.  I have personally worked on things that the media have reported and it's very clear that they don't read things properly and they put things in their own words for effect.
