Well I remember King George V1 and I was at school when the headmistress called the two classes (I went to a small village school) to attention, stood between the classrooms and simply said "The King is dead".

My mother had seen Elizabeth when they were both in the ATS and whenever she was mentioned used to remark that "she bent down when the men were passing". Ladies just didn't do that back then but I think my mother was being a little over-critical as they were wearing baggy overalls at the time 🙂
