I'm originally from Coventry and consider my accent fairly flat, nothing like Birmingham which is only about 20 miles away, but people from outside the area always confused the two. Now I live in Gloucestershire which has a wide variety of accents ranging from rural (the locals) to RP English (the moneyed 2nd homers) and everything in between. Occasionally I still get asked if I'm from Birmingham.
