How'd we know? We've observed the cosmos for long enough now to have worked out that it'll be the expansion of the Sun (as it dies) which will fry the Planet.

 

There won't be an "end day" as such, it'll be a slow, gradual process.

 

However, if a sufficiently large space object headed our way and collided, there'd be an "end day" of sorts depending on the actual size of the colliding object. If it was big enough, he whole Earth would be a goner.
