clock towers

Many towns have a clock tower. They are usually attached to churches or government buildings and normally have 4 faces. I know of only onewhich has three. It is located at the junction of Northbrook St, Oxford St and London Road in Newbury, Berkshire. Does anyone know of any others?

We have a four face one but it isnt attached to anything it stands in the town square.

Christ Church in Didsbury has 3 dials.

Apparently the Middlesborough Dock Clock tower only has 3 faces for the following reason:

Although the tower had four sides, there were only three clockfaces. The clock was paid for by public subscription. Either an ironworks or a shipyard refused to contribute because it didn't want its workers clockwatching.

All that we are is what we have thought.

Ours has four faces, and none of them tell the right time.

Why is the number 4 when shown as Roman numerals on a clock face displayed as IIII rather than IV

It's because it better "balances" the opposite numeral, VIII.

This clock has no faces, and yes, it is a clock.

£250,000 was spent on this monstrosity.

For interesting examples look no further than our Railway stations. Padding ton and Waterloo both have three faced clocks, York too but with two large and one small, for pure beauty try the Tiffany stained glass Clock at Grand Central station New York.
