I blame the Scotts; those who want to be seen to be more "Socially Aware" than the rest of the UK. Successive governments feel they have to pander to left-wing social caring rhetoric in order to win an election! I prefered the 70s and 80s when the two main parties stood diametrically opposed and faught toe-to-toe for what they believed in.
Now they say and do anything to cover the middle ground!
