Quite simple, his premis is that he didn't mean to kill her, he's killed the woman he loved and he is as devestated at the loss and as distraught at his actions as anyone. It will be on his conscience for the remainder of his life leading to a miserable existence which is suggested will punish him more than any jail term could.
