Pet Hate

No I don't mean people who don't like their pets and wouldn't dream of saving them if they were drowning!

I'm talking about things that pergaps shouldn't annoy you as much as they do but you can't help it. Here's one of mine:

My pet hate is people saying "you got that question wrong" and other such phrases on this theme.

Perhaps it shouldn't do so but if fecks me off! People don't get the question wrong they get the answer wrong; they give the wrong answer!

I see and hear it all the time, on game shows on TV, on the BBC website where you'd hope their supposedly cultured people would get it right, but no, they mess up just the same! I recently read an article about people "failing to get this question right". Surely You mean "failing to answer the question correctly"!

You fail to get the right answer!; if you fail to get the question right that means you've messed up in the way you've presented the question! This is so lazy and illiterate is bugs me big-time!

Then there's the hit record 'Never Ever' a big number one hit for All Saints. I recall watching them on TOTP with an audience whooping it up as they began the spoken intro "A few questions that I need to know".
NO NO NO you stupid half-wit bint!; you need to know the answers, you're the one asking the questions!!!
So everyone's whooping it up along with a bunch of illiterate boneheads who don't even realise they've messed up their masterpiece within the first line!

Anything bother you like this?

NO! I have enough faults of my own. lol.

Let's have an argument eh?

They didn't get the question wrong, didn't they answer the wrong question. grin

There may be something in that. Smiley Wink

One also presumes although the singers were not correct in what they were singing that's the fault of the songwriter Err! Unless of course they themselves wrote the song? lol

Ok! Case closed. Guilty of gross carp song writing. lol.

Personally I can put up with, "you got that question wrong", I know what the speaker/writer intends.

What really gets my goat are politicians who when asked a question reply along the lines of, "that is the wrong question, the real question is ....".

I hate bad grammar! I can be a real grammar pedant and sometimes I have to almost tie my hands to my sides to stop myself correcting some of the bad spelling and grammar on here! But the one that really makes me groan is when people say 'OFF OF'. I hear it and see it written more and more often and it seems to have crept into the English language. Where ever did that originate?

Trouble is with that of course , is that you lay yourself open to having your own faults scrutinised.

Yep, every time the wife says how perfect I am I have to remind her that even I have a few faults. Smiley Very Happy

Perfection in oneself has indeed many burdens! lol.

My pet hate is people saying or writing 'could of / would of / should of'.  I hear it and read it so often these days, including on these forums.

How can anyone go through 12-14 years at school and not know it's 'have', not 'of' ? Smiley Frustrated

Kids pick things up from parents far more than from school; sort the parent and you sort the kids!

I cringe when I hear the term "robbery gone wrong"!

Does a robbery ever go right?
