My point exactly , it does work both ways I totally agree with you & my opinion for what it's worth is this, it is very disconcerting for both sexes & I dare say you would have been the butt of a few jokes if you'd complained, that is wrong! Both sexes should respect each other's space & only step into it if invited to, if in doubt don't !!.
