In real life rather than that fairytale, the grasshopper was more likely to have struggled in a series of low paid jobs, living hand to mouth and therefore having no ability to save for the winter.

They wouldn't have been able to improve their home because it would have been owned by the squirrel who charged them a nice high rent in order to profit.
