As bad as Assad is reputed to be (if you believe Brit and Yank political rhetoric) he runs a stable secular state, even with a nod to democracy, which would be far from the case if the rebels/terrorists prevail.

Assad also protects the Christians and other minority faiths, unlike the Islamists who would exterminate them, as they are already doing so.

The British and American people are not myopic. They decided to exercise their democratic right not to be involved in another Middle East war, particularly on the side of barbaric AQ supporting radical Islamists.
