International shipping damage claim

Hi, I recently purchased an item from USA (I live in UK) which was damaged in transit.  The seller has refunded the purchase price (which wasn't very much) but can I claim the shipping costs from the transporter, as they damaged it and that was quite a big cost for me? If I can claim, how to I go about it please?  Thanks x

Who organised the shipping?

 

Did you pay for it via eBay checkout?

I did pay at ebay checkout, but can't remember off hand which company it
was, and obviously once it got to UK it was a courier service or Royal Mail
as well. I can find out, but what should I do then please?
