"You...you realise that people get the "Experienced Mentor" badge just for posting a certain amount of posts, right? As in, they don't actually work for eBay."
There's a bit more to it than just posting a lot, and although Mentors don't work for ebay, they are expected to be an "advocate of ebay". The following link details how you get to be a Mentor and what's expected of you:

Yeah, they're basically eBay cheerleaders.
What a weird thing to spend your time and effort on without getting paid for it.

eBay wouldn't need advocates if they just ran a decent platform with honesty, integrity, and transparency. People would naturally speak highly of them. But instead they run a dishonest, manipulative, shady platform and then because of that they need cheerleaders to shout to everyone that everything's hunky dory. People are not stupid though. Outside of this little walled-garden the truth is out there for everyone to see. Rather than beg for advocates, it would be better to just be decent.
It does highlight how even the forum isn't all that it appears to be.

I used to be an advocate of ebay in real life. I was like a brand ambassador, and constantly told all my family and friends, it doesn't matter what you want, you can get it on ebay. It's wonderful. Sadly ebay's own policies have destroyed my support for so many reasons - SD, BPF, useless search results, withheld payments, the constant tinkering, and the sheer annoyance and difficulty of doing anything on ebay these days. I'm no longer a brand ambassdor, and my family & friends know how far from grace ebay have fallen. But ebay's only got themselves to blame - they seem to have got the reverse Midas touch. It's quite sad really.

Oh I don't know, lots of people, not just mentors, spend time here trying to help others, I guess it's a sort of hobby in a way. And why not! And the mentors generally know ebay inside-out and can provide knowledgeable answers. I agree that the advocacy thing though can sometimes make them stand out as being different from most of the rest of the forum.

IF Mentors cannot say something good about Ebay then they tend to say nothing or very little. Many (quite rightly in my opinion) tread a fine line between being an Advocate and voicing their own personal opinion. They do not back Ebay and all their policies 100%.
I am an ex experienced Mentor by choice and have told Ebay do NOT promote me to Mentor again 🙂

A weird way to spend time and effort without getting paid for it????
I do not see why or how its weird if someone has a few hours to give free........ helping others with their Ebay issues. When my husband was working (and i was home alone) i used to spend more time giving advice on the boards than i do now. It didnt hurt trying to help people for a couple of hours in the morning. Its called trying to be a nice person and not expect to be paid for everything one does in life.

I used to advocate for ebay in real life too. Nowadays I tell people to sell elsewhere unless they think they will get a better price on ebay. My love for ebay has turned into irritation. It takes far too much time and effort to sell these days. I had a banner for something the other day (I forget what for) and my thoughts were ‘oh shut up and go away, I’ll do things how I want to’. That more or less sums up how I think of everything ebay suggests. Ive done my way successfully for years. Its only when I have to bend to ebays changes/rules that things have fallen off the success train.

Some peeps may be disabled and this the only ' contact' with the outside world that's available and easy to reach.
Some have a wish just to help people !
Does every helpful action need to end with a monetary result ?

Oh Im already expecting simple delivery for businesses. It would have to be optional though. I use postage stamps mostly. My buyers don’t want labels.

We don't know what would have happened in the parallel universe where ebay hadn't existed or had failed.
Probably another online marketplace would have emerged as dominant and maybe it would have treated it's buyers and seller better. I don't think we owe any debt of gratitude to ebay as they have certainly been paid for their efforts over the years as they are not doing it for charity.
Take each day at a time and judge them on what they say and do.

"They are not my enemy" is not the same as "We owe them a debt of gratitude."
Either way, nice work picking one sentence out of a post that was made over a month ago, and ignoring the rest of it. I guess if it helped alleviate your boredom for a bit, then more power to you.

I completely agree, ebay is keeping my money. Pending items when they say complete. I have a few items still listed but very worried about selling adding more. My mother was selling for 25 years, she's just close her account, lost a small amount of money better leave now 😒

I totally agree. The search doesn't work - in fact NOTHING works.
