I am hoping to book a break away in Feb to go to Norway or similar as I would love to see the Northern Lights.

I dont rate the battery grip as you will find the D300 is a brick i bought four batteries and just keep them charged they hold a charge for ages so keep 1 in camera 2 in bag one on charge
I can shoot a whole wedding and the battery goes down by 2 notches thats all
when you get more used to it a really great lens is either the prime 50mm 1.8 or the prime 35mm
I have a fair mixture of lenses but my most used it my sigma 10-20mm its really great for all types of photography and the distortion can be put to good use
I take it now your moving up to a big boy toy you have PS or PSE?

I am now able to keep my FZ50 which I can use as a backup but also has video capture if I ever really want to use it, though I never have apart from curiosity value.
was thinking of getting a couple of extra batteries anyway, lense wise I am looking at a 18 to 55, 55 to 200 and the 50mm 1.8. I have PSE at the moment but was going to look at PS too and may well take the plunge. What do you think to the VR lenses? are they worth the extra money IYO?
I really can't wait to get it and was expecting to be able to only afford the D90.......hence my excitememnt:^O

I dont know how heavy your old camera is the D300 is very heavy trust me having it round your neck hurts i would recommend a new neck strap i use the OP/TECH pro webbing strap
also a sturdy tripod like a manfrotto 190xpro B but not the 496rc2 head as its not strong enough to hold the D300 it will soon wear and be useless after 3 months look for a 3 way head something like the 804rc2
you dont have to buy new look on ebay another good tripod make is Giotts
I have set all my colour modes up myself on my D300 ans also done a copywrite in camera on each image

bet you cant wait,
I really busy at the moment with weddings and Xmas portrait sessions
have a really fun wedding on 31st a couple are getting wed as witch and Wizard and all the guest are going to be in Halloween customs, she has 3 little witch bridesmaids, so i have been gathering up leafs to dry out which i will put in three little baskets and get the girls to run behind the Bride and groom and throw them, should make an excellent shot
they have asked for contemporary wedding shots so have been sussing out the place its going to be a fun day and will add to my portfolio, I cant wait

That one sounds like fun and will be an interesting variation on the normal stuff, I would love to do one like that. The leafs is a great idea and as a bonus is more 'green' than confetti eh?
I must admit I prefer the contemporary style of wedding shots as they are by far away better as a story of the day imo.
Just an idea for one of the pics as i am sort of thinking ghosts and ghouls sort of theme is if you cover the first dance maybe get the bride and groom to stand on the dancefloor completely still and get the guests to dance around them use a long exposure and you will get the guests all blurred but the B&G completely in focus and sharp. I did this on the wedding day the other week and it was one of the most talked about pictures:-)

My hope is that I will be able to capture a number of fireworks in one frame and should be impressive (if it works) my other suggestion would also be to use the widest angle shot you can so you capture as much as possible.
Hope this helps, if it raises more questions then just ask:-D
