I think that the Sigma brand is (it used to be anyway) very well regarded so it probably really is 'top line stuff'

sturos I hadn't heard of it before, was just satisfying my curiousty.

Rising above it all!

I bought my son for his 13th birthday recently an olympus e500 and he went out with grandad today and used it for the first time.

He got a lot to learn and unfortunately the weather was appalling but he was very proud to come home and show me his pictures.

I think its really important for children to have a hobby and he is really interested in digital photography so I'm encouraging him as much as I can. He's seen this thread and loves the pics.

This is in Raphael Park in Havering.. (for anyone interested, Raphael Park is a haven for many different species of birds and there is a lake for water birds)

Well done, but make your PB private unless you don't mind everyone seeing what you have in there

Brynteg

From what i know they are both very good cameras I nearly bought a D40 but decided on another camera (non-SLR) as we use the camera for work as well as personal use and just felt that it would be hardier.

It might be worth joing Which? as it is only a £1 a month and you can cancel after the first payment if you wish, they have loads of advice, ratings at a glance etc.

Ease of use is something to look at as well as some cameras can be over complicated depending on what you want to do. It may also be worth visiting your local camera shop and organise a play around with a few cameras that you have narrowed down to see which one fits you best.

Well said sturos I found Jessops staff both knowledgeable and helpful, and started with a compact and now on their advice graduated to a bridging camera.

If you talk to them they will be able to identify the sort of camera that will suit you best.
